Starting at a new dental practice involves a few decisions: NHS or private, what you want from your first visit, and how you’ll pay. None of them is difficult once you know how things work, and you don’t need to have the answers before you call. This guide takes you through those three decisions, then explains what happens at your first appointment at Chalet Hill Dental & Implants in Bordon.

Short answer: Your first appointment is a full dental examination. We’ll go through your health and concerns, check your teeth, gums and mouth, take X-rays only if they’re clinically necessary, explain what we find and agree a plan with you.

Decision 1: NHS, Private, or a Bit of Both?

We offer both, so it comes down to what you need.

NHS treatment is offered to patients who qualify. It covers examinations, X-rays, fillings, extractions, crowns and dentures, with sedation for suitable patients, charged under the NHS’s standard bands. NHS fees change each April, so please ask us for current prices, and check when you call whether NHS places are available. See our NHS treatment page.

Private treatment covers more, including cosmetic treatments, Invisalign, implants and hygiene visits, with prices on our fees page.

Can I mix the two? You can have some treatments privately and others on the NHS, but NHS and private care can’t be combined within a single course of treatment. If you’re unsure how that applies to you, ask us.

Decision 2: What Do You Want From Your First Visit?

    If You Want… Then…
A routine check-up Book a general examination. We’ll check your teeth, gums and mouth and tell you if anything needs attention.
Help with a problem (pain, a broken tooth, bleeding gums) Tell us when you call so we can aim to see you sooner.
To improve your smile (whitening, bonding, veneers) Mention it when you book. For private treatment, you’ll have a consultation, the checks needed and a tailored plan with no obligation to go ahead.
To straighten your teeth Ask about Invisalign. The consultation is free, with a small deposit that is refunded on the day.
To replace missing teeth Ask about dental implants.

Decision 3: How Will You Pay?

For NHS care, you pay the NHS charge for the band of treatment you need. For private care, we’ll confirm costs before any treatment starts, and we offer payment plans to spread the cost. We also have a monthly subscription plan starting from £25 a month, covering check-ups and hygiene appointments among other benefits. Ask us for the current details.

    Registering

Use the “Register as New Patient” form on our private dentist page, or call 01420 476745. Please mention if you’re in pain, if you’re nervous, and whether you’re interested in NHS or private care.

What Happens at Your First Appointment

    • A conversation about your medical and dental history, medication and habits
    • An examination of your teeth and the soft tissues of your mouth
    • A gum check, because gum disease is easiest to treat early (see our gum disease page)
    • Mouth cancer screening, a routine and painless part of the check-up
    • A check of your bite and jaw joints, including signs of TMJ problems
    • X-rays, only if clinically necessary
    • An explanation of what we’ve found, what needs attention and what your options are

You can ask questions at any time, and nothing happens without your agreement.

    What to Bring

    • Your medical history and details of any medication
    • Previous dental records or X-rays, if you have them
    • A note of anything that’s worrying you
    • Proof of NHS exemption, if you’re claiming free treatment
    • A way to pay, for private treatment

Nervous, or Not Been for Years?

You’re not alone, and we won’t judge. Tell us when you book, and we’ll go at your pace. We offer sedation options and relaxation techniques, and your first visit is about finding out where things stand and making a plan that suits you.

    After Your First Visit

If you need treatment, we’ll explain it and what it costs. If everything looks healthy, check-ups are generally recommended every six months, though your dentist may suggest a different interval based on your oral health, age and risk factors. If a hygiene visit would help, we’ll let you know (see hygiene appointments).

    Urgent Problems

Tell us when you call if you’re in pain or have broken a tooth, and we’ll aim to see you as soon as we can. If you have spreading facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or feel very unwell, seek urgent medical help through NHS 111 or 999.
